Wanting to Use Your Talents for the Lord?

Come for a musical audition on Monday, August 11th from 2:30—3:30 p.m. in the Sanctuary. We are looking for young people who either play a musical instrument or sing to participate in the Youth Group Praise Band. You do not have to currently be a member of the Youth Group—you just have to want to play music!

If you have any questions call Elizabeth Rivera at (904) 537-6114 or Kathleen Olive at (904) 249-5418 Ext 17.

Thank you,

Elizabeth Rivera

The soul lover

Prolific hymn writer Charles Wesley wrote the moving song “Jesus, Lover of My Soul” in 1739. According to one story, Wesley penned the lyrics after surviving a raging storm at sea. A frightened bird apparently flew into Wesley’s window during the uproar, seeking safety in the folds of Wesley’s coat.

The first stanza is as follows:

Jesus, lover of my soul,

let me to thy bosom fly,

while the nearer waters roll,

while the tempest still is high,

Hide me, O my Savior,

hide, till the storm of life is past;

safe into the haven guide;

O receive my soul at last.

This brings to mind the frightened disciples in Matthew 8:23-27. Pummeled with wind and waves, they feared drowning and called to Jesus to save them.

We, too, can take refuge in our Savior during life’s storms, knowing we have a safe haven and a sure destination.

God’s Timetable Prevails

And the miracles continue in my life—there have been such an abundance of them!

Delighted and exhausted we are finally here. Bethlehem already feels like home thanks to the warmth and graciousness of everyone here—we thank you for that.

There is a lot of excitement here these days—new programs and ideas coming to life, anticipation of a refreshed sanctuary. Spring bursts forth and the summer promises to be a time of growth here. The choir has started, soon to be followed by the bell choir and cherub choirs (voice & bell), the praise team and be on the lookout for Bethlehem Lutheran Church concert series.

So many things to do—I must get busy so we can all make a joyful noise…..

Please contact me with any thoughts or ideas you may have about the music. I can be reached either here at the church (249-5418, ext 17) or at home (240-0934).

Many thanks and God’s blessings,

Kathleen Olive

I AM MUSIC

Servant and Master am I. Servant to those Dead and Master to those living. Through me Spirits Immortal speak the Message that makes the World Weep, and Laugh, and Wonder and Worship.

I tell the Story of Love, the Story of hate, the Story that Saves, and the Story that Damns; I am Incense upon which Prayers float to heaven. I am the Smoke which falls over the field of Battle where Men lie Dying with me on their Lips.

I am close to the Marriage Altar, and when the Graves open I Stand Nearby. I call the Wanderer Home. I Rescue the Soul from the Depths. I Open the Lips of Lovers, and through Me, the Dead whisper to the Living.

One I Serve as I Serve All; and the king I Make my Slave as easily as I subject his slave. I speak through the Birds of the air, the insects of the field, the crash of water on rock-ribbed shores, the sighing of the Wind in the Trees, and I am even heard by the Soul that knows me in the clatter of wheels on City streets.

I know no Brother, yet all near are my Brothers! I am Father of the Best that is in them, and they are Fathers of the Best that is in me; I am of Them and they are of me.

For I am the Instrument of God. I am Music.
